Kaiser Permanente Spoken Word Slam Competition

The Girls' Festival headline sponsor, Kaiser Permanente, highlighted the importance of mental health and wellness through a spoken word competition at the festival. How we think, feel, and act affects our overall health and mental wellbeing, and poetry can be a source of comfort and expression as well as a tool for social change.

The Kaiser Permanente Spoken Word Slam Competition invited girls (and those who identify as girls) 18 and under to enter this contest by submitting original poems relating to mental health. We selected five incredible girls to be our finalists and present their creative, inspiring poems on the Main Stage. The finalists performed in front of a panel of judges for a chance to win cash prizes (see below).

If you aren't familiar with slam poetry, it is a type of poetry competition where people read their spoken poems without props, costumes, or music and are judged by a panel of judges as well as the audience.

  • $500 cash prize for the winner
  • $200 for each of the four runner-up finalists
  • Top 5 finalists received up to 25 free Girls' Festival tickets each for family, friends, classmates, and teachers
  • Top 5 finalists performed on the Girls' Festival Main Stage!
